Major Management Shortcomings - Buyer Western Paper Distributors Employee Review

Pros

It’s not an entirely toxic as so many places are. There are a lot of nice people working below management and a few good managers that really care for their people. The benefits are medium ok since they got bought out by Imperial Dade. The one bright spot in management is that HR at the Denver office is amazing and very understanding. THEY see the employees as people but they’re all under 45 so that tells you why that is. As the old timers age out and the younger generation takes over, this company might become an ok place to work long term. Give it a decade and check back. The 1 stars all goes the the HR department.

Cons

Most senior management has been there 10+ years and is complacent in what it requires to make a position attractive and viable long-term to the up and coming work force. Most of the people who stay are older, the under 40 crowd has high turn over because the uppers withhold basic work place benefits that are common in todays Covid world. Unhealthy and unhelpful communication between managers, seniors and junior staff is common place. Most positions are completely remote friendly and yet flexibility of schedule and permission to work remote is all left up to department managers. If you’re unlucky enough to be in fulfillment you will be denied remote work despite 3 other people in that department working remote and the daily job being entirely suited for remote. This is all left up to the department managers because their managers don’t want to be bothered with the actual people management part of the business so a lot of great workers filter through and don’t stay because of arbitrary rules such as this. They are not transparent about salary on all job postings so they offer each applicant a different amount. I was offered almost 10k more than the next hire in my department with similar experience level and at the end of the day we are all doing the same job. Open communication between management and underlings is not open and encouraged and in my case I was punished for speaking out. My senior buyer shunned me for my last 2 weeks at this company because I spoke up about issues I was having and ask to work remote. I would not recommend this work place in its current “culture”.

Thank you for the feedback. It is unfortunate that your brief experience working at WPD was not a favorable as we would hope for a new team member. While there are some accuracies in this review (not all team members can work remote - especially those in early days of training), some of the conclusions around why remote work wasn't an option, pay and other matters are incorrect. That being said, we want to learn, do better and be better. This is also why we perform exit interviews with team members who are moving on so we can identify company strengths, things to celebrate and areas where we can get better. We are proud of what we have built at WPD and the culture we offer to team members. Our Fulfillment Team is full of long tenured employees who make significant contributions to the business, and unfortunately, it wasn't the right fit for you. We wish you all the best on your next opportunity.
