This is really interesting feedback.
We are seeing a shift in the overall healthcare world from LPN/RN mixed model to many hospitals only hiring RNs. Last week on a recent visit to several of our Indiana sites, I spoke with lots of LPNs who were pleased with the correctional environment because it allowed them to utilize a full gamut of their skills vs. just “passing meds.”
Each site runs very differently, so I don’t doubt that this is your personal experience, it’s just so different than what I’ve heard from the LPNs I’ve encountered. Our contracts are structured so that it is dictated how many RNs and how many LPNs we have on staff.
The only time we’d hire an RN in place of an LPN, is if we are experiencing an LPN shortage in a particular geographic area. If patient care could be jeopardized by us not being able to fulfill our contractual hours, we would “overhire” to offset this.
Our nurses, both LPNs and RNs, are the backbone of the company. I’m sorry you don’t feel your skills are being utilized to their fullest. If you haven’t already done so, I’d encourage you to reach out to your DON and HSA and let them know!
If you have already done so, and don’t see a change, work up the chain to your regional leader. There’s always plenty of work to go around, so I hate to think you are not happy with what you are being assigned.
Sincerely,
