Pros

Co-workers are nice and remote work is convenient

Cons

Extreme micromanagement and constantly changing comp plan with outlandish goal expectations that change from month to month and aren’t shared until almost mid month. This along with regular shifting of accounts that make it impossible to build relationships, result in unstable pay and a stressful environment.

Fast scaling startup with great people

Pros

The people at Ethos are some of the best I've worked with, genuinely nice, thoughtful, and smart. The company is working to solve a real problem for consumers (e.g. protecting a family's financial well-being in case the unthinkable happens to a breadwinner) in an industry is hasn't been disrupted for over 100 years. Free meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner if working late). Great company values and high performance team culture - seems to be lots of room to scale with the company and there's little bureaucracy. Leadership team seems to really care and responds to employee feedback.

Cons

Ethos has scaled very quickly (from 20 people to 100, in a year), and faces similar issues any fast growing startup might. Cross-functional communication, for example, is a much harder challenge with 100 people in 3 offices vs 20 people in one large room. But these growing pains are well worth the benefit of working with great people to solve an important problem for consumers.
