Pros

Remarkably bright and enthusiastic people work at Expedia making it easy to go to work each day. The people there are passionate about what they do and love travel.

Cons

Unfortunately Expedia sees its people as line items in an expense report. Plus, it constantly hires from outside and reorganizes, eliminating any and all chances for promotion and development. There is a relentless focus on numbers and short term results. Expedia talks a good game, but its actions don't match its words and it is an extremely political organization. Every VP, every Director, likes nothing better to build their own empire and attack other parts of the organization. It's a company that would much rather make a single extra dollar than invest in its employees. Customers matter even less; there is a near singular focus on transactions, bottom-line results and hard-line negotiating tactics with suppliers.

Pros

Nice to work for a well-heeled company.

Cons

Not creative. Not agile. Not technically advanced. and yet they think they are. The engineers at Expedia are some of the finest I've met, but there simply aren't enough of them. Too many green belts walking around slowing down the Black Belts. The result is a tech platform that is not well matched for web development tempo and an IT departement that is too over worked and under-managed to make life good for product developers. Beyond that, the company needs to find a clearer voice for its brand, to take a stand as to who its customer is (suppliers or travelers? pick one.)
