The best place for the right people

Pros

- The most interesting work I've come across - much of the work doesn't actually feel like work - Extreme flexibility in terms of what you're doing and when and how you do it, subject to good engineering principles and meeting deadlines - Virtually no micromanagement, useless meetings, or other things that eat into productive time - Lots of control over your career path - Support for continuing education, training, publishing, and additional credentials - Lots of freedom for who you work with - Lots of mentors willing to share advice - Awesome coworkers who have the same drive and dedication you do (Hint: If you don't, this probably isn't the right place for you!)

Cons

- The work never stops coming - it can be very hard to take a break, especially with lots of talented people around who continue to drive forward -Some projects are inflexible in terms of timing, and if you are working on global projects, 9-5 US business hours really don't apply. (But on the other hand, I can set my schedule to meet my needs, i.e. working in the mornings, afternoons free, and then overseas calls in the evenings)

Pros

The people are the #1 best part of the job, and the work variety is #2. Both are incredible opportunities that really set this job apart.

Cons

The experience you get makes you a much better candidate/worker/employee but compensation lags the cost of living, particularly as you transition from recent PhD to experienced consultant. Worst skill-salary ratio seems to be in the 3rd-5th years, based on retention.

Pros

If I had to do it all over again, I would absolutely take the job; but I would come in to Exponent with a 3 to 6 year exit plan. -Worked with collection of the smartest and most driven scientists and engineers I've ever met. Some of them were very fun to work with. -Work was often exciting and relevant to big news stories. -Grew "soft skills" including writing, marketing, and client management. -In theory, hours could be flexible, as long as work got done. -Big name clients offered interesting full time employee options. -Solicited by head-hunters for interesting full time employment options. -Exponent paid for certification testing (e.g. P.E. license) and associated continuing education courses or materials. -Mentors were easy to find in the early days.

Cons

-Work required being on-call almost 24-7. In my experience this became more true as time went on. -Travel (flying with at least one overnight stay) with less than a week notice (sometimes same day) was very typical and occurred several times per year. -Was not uncommon for consulting staff to quit within a year. -Moral drops after the "novelty" of project work wears off. -No monetary incentive for mentors. -No training on how to be a "manager" associated with being promoted to "manager". -Mentors were harder to find and less useful after a few years.
