Pros

Extremely competitive pay, opportunity to work with some very smart people, constant flow of challenges

Cons

Very political, Very cut-throat, high-stress/pressure work environment, diversity is not valued what so ever. ExxonMobil's culture is not for everyone, did not meet that many friendly people, it's all about business 24/7. They stress the importance of work-life balance, however the amount of work and hours required does not align with this claim at all. Additionally, favoritism is extremely high. If you are in the out-group expect to leave shortly. Finally, there is absolutely ZERO tolerance for mistakes, which places heavy restrictions on comfortable growth and learning opportunities. Best of luck if you decide to pursue a career here.

Pros

Refinery engineering jobs pay very well, and there can be lots of paths to advancement if you're open to relocation.

Cons

Work hours demanded often exceed 40/wk, and turnarounds basically require you to abandon your life and family for weeks on end. This work schedule just isn't reasonable when you have children. If you aren't willing to relocate, your options for advancement are limited, and your ranking will suffer. Supervisors and Managers are rotated through very quickly, so there's little consistency in priorities.

Pros

Great company. Opportunity to live in several parts of the world (if chosen). Company is full of top folks across the industry. Most people are genuinely great people.

Cons

Ranking system is made to protect the chosen ones and everyone else fall as they may. If you don't hit the ground running then you're behind! Lack of diversity. It's sad how un-diverse the business unit I worked in was. Upper management all look the same (i.e. old white male). There are back-stabbers. With the ranking system as it is, back stabbers are inevitable. So you have to keep your eyes open and watch your back.
