Stable, large and predictable

Pros

Stable, great people, interesting colleagues, important work. Ethical employer with good benefits who won't bother you too much if you just show up each day and put in your time. Move you around enough to develop you, so the work doesn't get too boring.

Cons

I get the feeling that the less I ask questions the happier everyone is. Train smart enough people to do flawless work over and over and over again, and you'll have a great market leader. The ranking system creates a culture of blame, even among good people who genuinely want to be team players.

Pros

Good pay and good benefits.

Cons

People usually start straight out of college and have their entire careers here. The environment is fosters blind loyalty and those who are not aware believe that this culture is the only one that exists. That is fine, unless you disagree with management... Perceptions weigh very heavily here, more so than at other companies. The claim is that the company is so large that there is ample opportunity to move around to different positions within the different companies. This is not true. Your career is at the mercy of your manager and how he/she "defends" you during the ranking session. The extremely competitive ranking session is partially based on actual business results and unfortunately, a good amount is based on perceptions. Pay is good, but they expect you to work on your evenings and weekends too. A true life/work balance is very difficult to achieve here.

Pros

Pay and benefits. Freedom to work when/where you want, as long as the business goals are achieved (within reason, of course).

Cons

Much of the management are just promoted lead engineers, with poor leadership and people skills. Success as deemed by the company requires more than just simply doing a good or great job. EM uses a forced ranking system, so you often have to do things above and beyond to set yourself apart from your peers (perception).

Thanks for the feedback. Consistent, quality supervisor training is an initiative currently being worked in Human Resources.
