Pros

• Hire based on aptitude • Great route into IT sector with well-known clients • Very little prior experience needed • Whilst not a qualification as such, FDM's reputation proceeds you, commanding a great deal of respect in the workplace • Support from trainers is excellent and very easy to access • Staff are approachable at all times and create a comfortable atmosphere for trainees' development

Cons

• Intensive course; fantastic for learning quickly but difficult to catch up if you begin to fall behind in any given module • Certain modules of the course can feel unbalanced (it's routinely commented that the Unix programme in particular is a little over-loaded for a single week's study) whilst others (Pro Skills) perhaps don't require the full week devoted to them • Unpaid training period is a barrier to entry for those without savings/similar

Pros

I came to FDM with no technical background and a MA in Middle Eastern Studies. Having successfully completed my Software Test Analyst training I am awaiting security clearance for the Home Office! Everyone in my group got placed except for one person - note we all got placed whilst in training. 6 got placed with the Home Office, one with HSBC, two with AA and another two with YBS. We have just completed our training and only one person failed to get placed during the training period.

Cons

I would say that the the training is intense and not everyone is capable! I have witnessed one person get asked to leave after failing the UNIX exam three times. The best thing about FDM will be your colleagues, you will have to be there for one another to make it. One week to learn a new skill and pass an exam / complete a project makes this process challenging... but who doesn't like a challenge? Further, the training isn't incredible, to pass the exams and finish the projects first time round you should prepare on the weekend ( worked for me). If you are a highly motivated individual and have a strong work ethic then there is no reason why you wont do well with FDM. Just keep in mind that you are given three shots to pass an exam or project, if you fail your third attempt it's game over. Some FDMers obviously feel they are entitled to more but I think these fresh graduates are getting ahead of themselves, they were informed at the start about the contract and the rules. There are no surprises it's your fault if you the sign the contract but then decide the contract isn't for you.

Pros

It's a good opportunity for graduates for the first 2 years Good chance to get high profile employers on your CV Chance to relocate and work in different area of the country/world

Cons

No incentives after 2 years even if you become a permanent employee Doesn't support relocation or reimburse relocation cost (not a good way to encourage employees) Poor relationship between account managers and employees/contractors (not true for all account managers) Poor response from Admin and Finance teams
