Pros

Great to feel that your work is helping the community. The people are great to work with. I enjoyed my collegues very much. Upper leadership is wonderful, very knowledgeable and genuinely engaged in promoting a strong, diverse, and supportive culture. The most diverse work environment I have ever encountered. Generally employees appreciate and support each other. Work life balance is strong.

Cons

Work satisfaction dependent upon your manager. Upper management is working to enhance culture but not all mid-level management supports new ideas. There is a lot of institutional knowledge as many employees have long tenures, this can make learning a challenge as you need to interpret the perspective of the person speaking. It is easy for long timers to take for granted that everyone just knows what they mean. There is a 90 day probationary period HR never mentions until day one.

Pros

The FHLBC is a great employer with amazing benefits. While the bank is small in employee size, it is huge in volume of clientele so you are exposed to many different facets of the mortgage banking industry. The salary is competitive with industry norms. However, the Benefits are unheard of... they pay for going back to school and getting your MBA and they also have a pension system for all full time employees. I didn't know places like this still existed.

Cons

As the bank's purpose is providing liquidity to the mortgage banking industry, you won't be exposed to other types of banking. As mortgage/wholesale banking isn't going anywhere though, this isn't really that horrible of a "con"...

Pros

Great benefits, salary, beautiful location, some nice people. The small number of employees allows for plenty of stretch assignments, and there is an incredible tuition reimbursement program.

Cons

Very cliqueish at the top levels of management. If you're in with the in crowd, or considered a "darling" of one of the annointed, you will have a very nice bonus year after year. Lots of creative hiring or "re-engineering" to elevate or bring in cronies with no job postings or legitimate interviews.
