Pros

Decent wages and bonuses Decent benefits

Cons

They have no understanding of diversity. They have one woman of color on the executive board who just made that position. They lack any understanding of what the word diversity means, if you read about this department, all it mentions is inclusion.... inclusion has NOTHING to do with diversity. The picture they provided of "diversity" is such a misreprestation from what Mankato and Owatonna look like. Federated has a big push for the word "networking", which really means this is the only way you are going to get promoted. People who should have gotten promoted because they know their job duties have been overlooked because they didn't meet Federateds outdated guidelines.  Then you have people who have worked there for so many years and get away with treating you like crap. Management won't do anything about it but turn a blind eye because seniority stands firm. They gloat about how the profits they have been made and forget the people who had to work crazy hours to reach these goals. The want to show appreciation through pizza parties then demand more work. The workplace is toxic which in turn is making the people that work there toxic. Federated has stated they do not allow working from home, but that differs from lead to lead, and you can see favoritism. Along with the fact supervisors can freely work from home under their own discretion Absolutely no such thing as work/life balance.

Pros

Excellent benefits Your direct team members are for the most part great people Quality training

Cons

Federated is a fantastic propaganda machine! They pump the home office and support staff thinking that no other insurance provider is better. I left my initial training feeling like I won the lottery. I told my friends I work for the best company in the country. After a month in the field, I quickly learned that was not the case. Federated has good coverage and an excellent claims team. I would often joke with customers when I first sign them on that if they had a claim, they would be very happy with how it's handled. 95% of the time that was true. The problem with Federated is they write customers cheap and then quickly increase premium. You have little control over underwriting. Your underwriter controls your livelihood. If you have a good underwriter, your life is significantly easier. Most are too afraid of not hitting their increase goals from their managers that they don't move on accounts that shouldn't be getting an increase. Federated grows off of existing customers as more of a focus than external growth. It's easier and cheaper to renew an account high than write a new business. Another big problem I had with Federated is the huge disconnect in the layers of management. There are the guys (very much a good ole boys club from the mid-west) that sit in home office. They really only communicate with long standing reps that have achieved high success. Then there are multiple layers of middle management down to the actual foot soldiers. Most Federated district managers are promoted young with 2-3 successful years in the field. Federated has to do this because reps will eventually out earn the management position. If they paid their district managers more, they would get successful proven reps that have been in the trenches for 5-10 years and have a much better grasp of reality than the powers that be in home office. These new managers go out and hire people by telling them the average rep makes $200k. It's a very misleading statistic. Federated believes all territories are created equal. Nothing could be further from the truth. Every rep (550+ throughout the country) has the exact same quota. Think about that! A rep in rural West Virginia is required to sell the same amount of premium and life insurance as a rep on the outskirts of LA, Philly, or NYC. Is premium the same in CA as it is in MO or VA? It's insane! If you're looking to get your foot in the insurance industry door with hopes of moving on in a few years, this is an excellent opportunity. Federated will train you well. They tell you that you are more trained than other agents (remember that propaganda machine?) If you are looking to make this your final stop until retirement, enjoy the grind. Don't let Federated hiring managers fool you. Federated Insurance is a life insurance company that offers a property and casualty product. You are graded and judged on selling life insurance. You'll make your money selling P&C.

Pros

Some good opportunities if you live near an office Benefits are decent for claims if you plan to stay one place forever Moderate level of independence on file handling

Cons

Not allowed to work from home even if you have a job done completely over the phone and email. Only when the pandemic was in the early stages was everyone able to work at home. Despite the many surges in cases that eclipsed those numbers, they still forced people to go to the office just to sit in their cubes despite nothing going wrong with claims handling while everyone was working from home. Must wear a mask all day even when alone at your desk just because of their out of touch ideas of office culture trumps everything else. Nobody actually cleans shared spaces when they’re done so you have to use the office fridge and other things that you know others have been touching with truly no way to avoid cross contamination with your own belongings. We can’t even have meetings. We literally still have meetings over Skype yet we are forced to do so while in the office. The exact same tech but forcing people to go to the cesspool of an office to use it. With the many corporate level benefits of switching to work from home at least at the regional offices (no more lease costs, attract and hire in all 50 states for any position, etc) you would think that they would at least consider some future that includes work from home for at least some positions, but they won’t. Work from home decreases costs of living for employees and decreases corporate spending. It’s a no brainer.
