Pros

Good salary. Great people! Plenty of resources to get your job done. Most managers don’t micromanage. Great working relationships. Smart business, industry conservativeness is done the way it needs to be to stay solvent and have good ratings and gradings from a money management and pricing standpoint. Great bonus opportunity! Career growth options are extensive in the larger home office location. Limited at other cities, but if they would open up departments to having employees in the other cities, there is a lot of potential! Future potential is huge for many avenues, new generations will help drive diversity, and employee flexibility in terms of telecommute options, etc, for a better work-life balance for each individual. All items in the cons section can easily be remedied and evolve into pros with the open-minded management of newer generations.

Cons

No telecommuting options to accommodate work-life balance, to Federated work-life balance only means getting your work done at the hours and place they can watch, so it is really about work balance, not really allowing options to help the life balance fit. Business Casual in an atmosphere that really doesn’t need it. Stiflingly conservative. I feel stuck, like punching a clock on salary, managers roaming the cubicles to keep tabs, can only work from home when not getting paid for the time (sick, vacation, extra unpaid hours only). Few paid holidays and below average vacation days. Inflexible for families, no allowance for working from home as needed (sick kids, etc), even though it is completely possible. Older technologies. Diversity of people is lacking. Upper management pats themselves on the back too much when anything “diverse” happens, quotas feel like a real thing.

Pros

Meet fantastic people and work with successful business owners everyday. Phenomenal training and education. Perhaps the best in the entire insurance industry. This is one the best entry jobs into high level sales you can find. Long term career as a marketing rep is left solely for masochists.

Cons

Federated cares little for its employees or its clients. This is proven by the constant do more with less attitude and never ending renewal increases on all accounts even those without losses. If you aren't working 80+ hrs a week as a marketing rep you're wrong. On top of the grueling hours and lack of support they do everything they can to derail successful people from being even more successful by awful inside practices. MR's literally cannot trust their inside partners to get the job done right. Reps have to micromanage every little detail of your position which takes them away from what they do best, selling. Federated does a good job of brain washing their sales force into believing that Federated is the best company out there and all other insurance agents/carriers are inferior. My first year out of Federated and I've made more money than my best year at Federated working with just as good if not better carriers than Federated. Every successful person at Federated who has left talks about how happy they now are and how much better off they are as a person. Federated's motto is Faith, Family, Federated but if any manager ever followed this motto I'd be surprised. You support your family by working day and night with zero time for husband/wife/kids/family/friends. My best friend lives 35 mins from me and I saw him only 5 times in over 7 years. Use this company as a starting point for a high end sales job and you'll find yourself shooting up the charts! Stay here and you'll likely become bitter and angry from the huge loads of stress and lack of work/life balance.

Pros

Great Training Many are called few retire in the Marketing Representative Position. Gut it out 2-3 years and move to an independent agency.

Cons

Required to spend more time on Life Insurance to keep your job and bonus the management layers on top. Direct writers are great if you catch the wave of a cycle.
