Pros

Good work schedule Monday-Friday overtime on Saturdays was on a volunteer basis when offered. Immediate supervisor very helpful. Good co-workers. Working outdoors. Good exercise.

Cons

Have to use your own personal vehicle a lot of wear and tear. You are reimbursed for mileage but that doesn't come close to cover costly auto repairs! Hard to get in full time unless your in one of the few union shops. Looks like they hire and use a lot of contractors and let you go at end of contract. Expect to walk many miles daily. Phasing out meter readers jobs in Ohio in the near future just like they did in Pennsylvania-smart meters. No benefits for contractors.

Pros

Decent pay, benefits probably comparable i suppose. Lots of potential storm OT.

Cons

Management constantly in disarray and has power struggles between management. Stupid decisions are made in upper management, and there is an every man for himself mentality. Minimal chances for advancement unless you know someone. They get rid of low level workers, won't replace them and then hire more managers and directors. Have totally unreal expectations at employee level, and move people around into unwanted positions. Some groups are treated great, while engineering is constantly getting dumped on. Low level supervisors aren't allowed to make any decisions, they all have to be run up the ladder, and you many times never get an answer. Rule is by fear and intimidation in some groups. Benefits are barebones anymore. Steadily going downhill in my 13+ years of employment. Morale as bad as I have ever seen it.

A good place to work

Pros

Good pay and benefits, no pressure to work overtime, good sense of work life balance and normally promote from within

Cons

Too much emphasis on who you know as opposed to what you know. Not the easiest place to get integrated into the culture for experienced personnel
