Out of Touch Leadership, Burned out Employees and Below Market Pay

Pros

I really liked my team. Folks had great work ethic and were very knowledgeable

Cons

In my opinion it seems Leadership is disconnected from the employees who are doing the day-to-day work. With continued layoffs, poor systems, hiring freezes, and unfilled roles, many employees are now doing the work of multiple people, leading to burnout and low morale. Pay is not competitive with the market, and internal systems often cause more delays and manual rework. Meanwhile, new executive roles have been added, and raises or bonuses for staff have been inconsistent or nonexistent. There are concerns about lack of diversity at leadership levels. In my experience, there was limited representation of people of color in leadership and low retention among minority employees. The recent return-to-office mandate is likely to worsen things.

CEO Ruining the Company

Pros

Everyone I personally work with is amazing- welcoming, personable, and helpful. We still get pensions and a decent 401k.

Cons

Unfortunately Brian Tierney is FirstEnergy’s CEO. I say unfortunately because ever since he has arrived, employee morale and almost every incentive to work here has plummeted. They’re forcing return to office for no reason, even after continuous success being remote. They laid off a large number of employees without much warning and it always feels like another lay off is impending. FE quietly changed how our performance reviews are handled and how our bonuses are paid out… we originally weren’t supposed to get a bonus for 2024 but after they announced layoffs I guess they wanted to throw in a sweetener. Real nice to know that the money was there the whole time, but Brian and his buddies didn’t want to shell out any more. Interesting to think that Brian came from Blackstone and then FE invested into that company a few months later. Anyway, FE will only get worse until executive leadership changes. Expecting a merger to happen any minute now. Also.. compensation isn’t the best.
