      It's an OK place to work.

      Pros

      At FSU, you are around some very interesting and intelligent coworkers. Mostly, it's a relaxed atmosphere. The students coming and going mean that there are always new and interesting people to know. The institution has reasonable computer network support, and benefits similar to other government positions.

      Cons

      Salaries below the commercial sector. There is very limited chance for advancement unless you are an academic. There are multiple examples of senior employees who have very limited real-world experience. Salaries are currently frozen a the university. The University has very limited capabilities for working from home. There is no accessible VPN. Parking is a nightmare.

      Climate is good; faculte colleagues hard working and dedicated

      Cons

      Governance is autocratic and narrow in outlook; athletics dominates most aspects of university life. Students are bright but not challenged. Administration more focused on generating numbers--in students, grants, publications- than assessing or producing quality.

      Pros

      Fellow colleagues are an integral part. High level of education around constantly. Compensated for a job you don't mind having. Constantly around education and intelligent people, enhances workers' lives more and provides a tolerable and enjoyable place to work.

      Cons

      Mainly, working under grants provides no opportunity for benefits.
