Pros

People are friendly, unlimited PTO, flexible remote work, fun to talk to other developers. Non-tech people were good at their job. CEO seems like a good person, always smiling :).

Cons

Nothing ever gets delivered. Absolutely no planning and always with radical ideas. It feels like management is intentionally trying to spend their IT budget and everything is just for paperwork. After a while, I even stop trying and was just hanging out and collecting my paychecks. CTO is eccentric and surrounds himself with similar people only. He is always busy and becomes a bottleneck. He will not show up in your 1:1 meetings that his assistant schedules, no acknowledgment or apologies later.

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback with us. We appreciate you sharing some of the pros of our organization with our continued efforts towards culture, engagement, and DEIB. We are sorry about your experience at FluentStream. We’ll address some of the challenges you mentioned in hopes it can provide better clarity for prospective employees. - While we continue to invest for the long-term, our investment in products & technology has increased seven-fold during that same time period. Working in our small but mighty tech department with a proprietary platform can be challenging, but also exciting to see the fruits of your labor developed to help thousands of customers. - In short periods, we work to deploy multiple services. While the pace may not be that of a large consulting firm or one of the large tech companies, we are also working with significantly fewer resources. We respect our employees as individuals and as people and understand that work/life balance is incredibly important to employee happiness and longevity. - As a rapidly-growing organization with big aspirations, this can create unique obstacles and challenges that can be frustrating for sure, but also super fun and rewarding to overcome. We try to attract Streamers that share in this growth mindset. - We are a welcoming, humble group who start each day with a goal to leave our company and platform in a better place than we started with. We have made amazing strides over the last two years and, with your feedback, we will continue working to enhance our team.

Chaotic and Unfullfilling

Pros

Some of the office culture is fun and changes with new CEO is on right track as far as paying people what they're actually worth.

Cons

It is the worst code base ever and it's a result of having a foundation of no one around to ever give quality code reviews but blame each other instead making for a horrible work environment to boot. Not only is it in a language I would heavily not recommend starting out your dev career in, but you won't be able to actually learn or grow into a quality dev because you're working on a codebase done by people who were paid so abysmally low and made to work so many hours that literally the only social life they could ever have is that within the "company". Even if you don't mind PHP, this is not the codebase to learn on unless you want to actually learn spaghetti code with no actual structure and then restart everything you thought you knew until after you leave and learn what it's like to work with quality engineers who don't just blame other coders behind your back but actually give quality code reviews for you to grow and learn from. The prior CEO loved to blame which is where the culture propagated from and hasn't changed since and it is extremely difficult to actually turn the codebase into quality code with the foundation it has while still needing to support a large customer base that genuinely seems to be a miracle that stays and grows.

We are sorry and saddened by your experience at FluentStream. During the 3 plus years since you left, FluentStream has completely transformed from a bootstrapped start-up to a professional, high-growth company with a reputation for taking care of its employees and customers. We have worked hard to establish a sustainable company & culture that our Streamers (employees) are proud of. Here are some specific ways we have evolved since your time with us: - New company ownership, and every current employee receives equity. - New leadership across all departments of the company, including technology and human resources. - New technology, culture and process including standards for code reviews, completion, documentation, maintenance and security. - New compensation and benefits packages that are nationally-competitive. - Increased focus on diversity and inclusion. Today nearly half our workforce and senior leadership are women. - Fully-remote workforce, with employees all over the U.S. In no way does our evolution excuse the negative experiences you had during your time with FluentStream over 3 years ago, but we hope our response helps current and prospective Streamers understand what FluentStream is like today. To that end, if you have any additional feedback or what to learn more about the company we are today, please reach out to us at hr@fluentstream.com. Thank you.
