Pros

The industry is dynamic and crucial: it is a net exporter of hardware and an important source of innovation. Sometimes you get exposed to state-of-the-art developments in several disciplines.

Cons

Lack of domain knowledge on part of middle and senior management: too much emphasis on 6-Sigma certification: an emphasis on formalism and disdain for true innovation: a constipated beauracracy interlaced with personal duchies that thrive on a cult of personality. An overwhelming push to outsource and offshore as a first and last resort.

Pros

If you are a college graduate and get accepted into the EEDP program, and are willing to put in the extra hours required to succeed it is a good company to work for

Cons

I found that GE Aviation is grossly incompetent at understanding the needs of a mid-career person who is transitioning in to the company. As a mid-level engineer you are expected to perform at the level of native GE mid-careers with little or no allowance to get up to speed. Engineering managers are woefully incompetant at leading people, they simply beat on you to work incredible hours to get the job done with little to no assistance at removing obstacles. My Subsection manager gave me no deliverables when I joined the group, and provided very little direction for the year. He then rated me "least effective," something that 10% of their workforce must be rated. HR has provided very little assistance, and does not seem to be interested in making sure their employees are placed in departments that are a fit with their talents.

Pros

GE's reputation is one of the best in the business world, and there is a certain level of prestige that goes with working there. Because it's a big company involved in different industries with many locations, there are many opportunities for career development and movement within the company. In other words, it seems like a place where you can find a niche that meets your career aspirations and other work/life needs without having to change employers. The benefits are also good. One in particular I've used is the extensive amount of employee discounts available on many different products (not just GE's). This enabled me to purchase a new car from Ford at a substantially lower price.

Cons

Some people may not like being part of a huge organization. It's definitely one in which you're expected to be in charge of your own career and do things for yourself. I would say there's not a lot of hand-holding (which I happen to like). Also sometimes the bureaucracy may exhibit some inertia at times, but that's to be expected in a company this size. People coming from a small organization where they had complete control over every aspect of their business may experience a little culture shock when faced with now having to deal with centralized functions such as finance, HR, supply chain, and IT.
