Pros

1. Committed to client service and quality. 2. Competitive pay and benefits. 3. Family feel in local office. 4. Privately held company - Employee stock ownership returns good dividends. 5. Committed to growth and improvement of business.

Cons

1. Regular acquisitions has resulted in regular changes in management and processes. 2. Canadian based management of US business presents challenges. 3. Although the policy has recently changed, a focus on hours worked set a bad precedent for some.

Pros

I had the opportunity to work on projects (such as Superfund cleanups) that I would not have had a chance to work on if I had remained in the laboratory.

Cons

Company culture went downhill fast after my former company (CRA) merged with GHD in 2015. I was also expected to be available 24/7 electronically, so work/life balance was horrible. There were also few opportunities to move up, having a Principle/Associate/Worker management structure. The company is also heavily slanted towards the engineering disciplines, so chemists were always seen as a necessary evil at best. There was also a quantity over quality bias towards work, so it was necessary to clock a minimum of total hours of which a significant portion needed to be billable to a client project.

Pros

There are a lot of nice people to work with.

Cons

This is a company (and office) that does not care about your personal life at all. I was required to travel all the time, for at least 2 weeks at a time, even with kids at home. If you can't do that, then expect to be let go. They even let a very pregnant co-worker go during the recent layoffs. After I witnessed that, I started looking for another job. I easily found one with better pay that didn't require me to travel nearly as much.
