Great job depending on market

Pros

Opportunity to advanced and be recognized if your performance is great. A career in a field that does not feel the sting of bad economy as much as other retail jobs. Great way to help people improve their lives.

Cons

I've read numerous horror stories about working for GNC. I will not deny those as I can see them happening unfortunately. I was lucky enough to be a in a good market (division) and had competent senior level management. But I know for a fact if you are in a poor market/district it may be hell to work for.

Pros

- discount on products ( although if you shop around just a little you can still find better deals) - product knowledge

Cons

- HORRIBLE COMPENSATION- you are expected to open, close, work alone, stock and restock, and be responsible for numbers all on a minimum wage salary with some crap commissions. For a part time, minimum wage employee i shouldn't have to drive across town at night to deliver the deposit to the bank. Its dangerous, its foolish ( honestly what is stopping me from stealing) and its not worth the headache. And if you have a low volume store (i.e mine which is in a dying mall, where all the shops are leaving) your opportunity to make commissions is nonexistent. - THEY PUSH FOR YOU TO SELL GNC PRODUCTS THAT YOU DONT GET A COMMISSION ON- How can a company expect their employees to sell products that they don't give commission on. Its almost insulting that we are forced to push products that offer no value to the individual sales associate. - ONE PERSON WORKS AT A TIME- Most stores have only a few associates, so your working by yourself. VERY BORING

Pros

Great learning experience; builds selling skills along with supplemental knowledge. Most managers are very cool. 30% discount, which stacks on top of the sale price.

Cons

You have to know too much and do too much for what you get paid for. (you get paid the same as a cashier at a grocery store) Morality is not encouraged; it seems as if all that matters is the sale and your quota at the end of the day, not the customer's satisfaction. No incentives beyond commission. People expect you to be a doctor sometimes and make calls as if you were one.
