Overall A Good Experience

Pros

Strong and consistent form of doing business. Although many would feel the company size is small as a negative, there are a great deal of relationships that are formed which build a community you want to come to work everyday for. This is the type of company you would be able to stay for a long time, the type where company loyalty still exists both from management to their employees but also from employees to management. The company has also just turned 100 years old showing their stability.

Cons

HR cracks down on performance and attendance too much however at least the managers actually fight for their employees.

Pros

Got to work with current technology in terms of server hardware and software.; first exposure to IBM Websphere software; convenient midtown location.

Cons

Help desk system was via overhead loudspeaker; I was asked to repair a hardware device then was reprimanded for installing the required software. There were numerous warnings posted - don't take someone else's food from the refrigerator, don't write graffiti in the bathroom. Aren't people adults here?

Unhealthy culture

Pros

None other than it’s a small niche market so you get to become an expert in Hab in underwriting.

Cons

This company operates in a toxic environment where leadership manages through fear, intimidation, and favoritism. If you’re not part of the favorite group, you often feel excluded and undervalued. One of the biggest challenges I faced was working under a controlling manager whose micromanagement created stress while offering little support or guidance. Rather than building people up, her approach left many employees frustrated and demoralized. Across the company, leadership relies on control and mistrust, withholding knowledge to maintain authority instead of encouraging collaboration and growth. This gatekeeping, combined with noticeable gaps in expertise, creates confusion, poor decision-making, and constant tension among teams. Not to mention, the CUO makes derogatory political comments towards a group of people on all company calls. Turnover is understandably high, as employees eventually leave the unhealthy culture. Prospective employees should carefully consider the leadership style and lack of support here, as development and well-being are not prioritized.
