Pros

Great place to work for it’s name caché. Amazing benefits. You’re surrounded by smart people.

Cons

Bureaucracy at it’s worst. Not a nimble or adaptable organization. The phrase navel gazing comes to mind. Limited upward career mobility.

Gates Foundation Response

When the foundation feels bureaucratic, slow, or inward facing, that's on us. Unlike so many players in the sector - governments, multilateral organizations, large nonprofits, even corporations - our operating model comparatively gives us flexibility to adapt, freedom to move fast, and resources to innovate. And right now, some teams are better at harnessing these advantages than others. But make no mistake, operating in these ways is the goal given that's what's required for 21st C success. -chris.ernst@gatesfoundation.org

Pros

Great mission Lots of great smart, dedicated mission driven colleagues Interesting work

Cons

New leadership all from silicon valley - lots of hubris Not realistic in expectation setting or the state of systems and processes, we can't wave our arms and just "do something different" Things are getting worse not better New executive leadership is as dysfunctional as ever

Pros

The name brand with the foundation is great on your CV, the campus and benefits are great, and there are some individuals who truly changed my outlook on the world for the better. There is some innovating going on, I am better prepared to think even more critically and bring a polished level of professionalism where ever I go.

Cons

Toxic, difficult work environment, like 1200 crabs in a bucket trying to claw their way into owning something important. The office dynamics and politics are suffocating even for those most game for those issues. People are obsessed with getting in there and then are faced with am overwhelming amount of red tape. The time I was there was a complete slog with amazing bright spots of travel and good people. I can't say I would recommend the place in the least bit, but I guess I am glad I was there. I am mostly just glad it's over.
