Pros

Benefits and pay. Some amazing coworkers, though the good ones never stay long.

Cons

The leadership has been actively trying to balance out reviews on Glassdoor, so be wary of what you read. Here’s the truth from someone with a lot of prior experience in The public, private and non-profit sector. All organizations have their issues. But this one, sadly, is truly toxic. The culture problem is at the top. I take the CEO at her word that she wants to improve it. Unfortunately, the leadership that sit between her and the low level managers and staff have no interest or incentive to improve and are in fact the core of the problem. The CEO and the trustees will never be allowed to see the truth or how the organization functions. HR helps enforce this dysfunction rather than actively addressing it as a real HR shop would. And everyone else is afraid to speak up. Such a shame, as the mission is so compelling and the opportunith and urgency vast. You have great colleagues — but if they speak out, they “disappear” - suddenly they are gone. Fired, resigned, who knows. But I’ve never seen people leave so suddenly and inexplicably. The people wih substance leave within a few years almost withou exception. Especially if they are women. If you choose to go there, know that you should trust no one. Seems dramatic, but it is true. All organizations have their flaws. Managers throw their staff under the bus constantly. There are some exceptions, but it is more the norm than not.

Ouch, this hurts. I've sat with your feedback for a few days and now want to reply from a reflective and forward-moving place. Three thoughts: 1) As a foundation leader, I hope and trust you did your part to be part of the solution around the issues you raise during your time with us. If you didn't have a chance to communicate them outside of this anonymous forum, please reach out to me directly. 2) Counter to your assertion, leadership has made zero effort to "balance out reviews of Glassdoor." What we have done, which feels like best practice, is to update our Glassdoor content and to personally respond to all reviews. That's it, and much less than what typical companies do. We've seen across the board improvements in Glassdoor metrics over the past 2-3 years, yet we only became active on the platform as an employer over the past year. 3) The CEO and trustees see making the foundation a great place to work for great talent as one of their top priorities. Rather than "not seeing the truth," they in reality receive the rawest and most transparent of data about the foundation experience. That data speaks to the many highs of working at the foundation and where there are stubborn challenges still to address. The incentive issue you note is absolutely one of our most stubborn obstacles, and one we will continue to chip away via approaches like portfolio management that incent our collective success. I appreciate the directness of your comments and hope you can respect my equally frank response. -chris.ernst@gatesfoundation.org

Love hearing about your foundation experience. Interestingly, I learned at a recent gathering of HR heads of large foundations that the issue of work/life balance was a top concern across the entire sector. The weight we feel to make a positive difference often translates into long hours that can become contagious across teams. At BMGF, we will continue to think strategically about wellness and how culture can support each of us being at our best. -chris.ernst@gatesfoundation.org
