Pros

There are still some good researchers around but there is a slow and steady brain drain going on. Compensation is not the best but OK.

Cons

A lot of managers have risen to their current position due to attrition and not because of their qualifications/qualities/abilities. They are understandably afraid of more qualified and able personnel and try to hamper their career growth. Since everything here is manager driven if you get a bad one then, well, too bad. However there are some great people here who actively foster employee development but none of them are in research. People in commercial operations and development seem to be happy but those in research appear to be equally (if not more) unhappy. Benefits are slowly going away, with the bi-monthly Ho Ho-s, then the compensation for riding on the bus; now they have started asking employees to pay for taking the bus on some routes (previously this was only limited to contractors and temps). Health insurance is not as good as before. Some people pretend to do "science" without any understanding of it. Lower level employees cannot give real feedback on their managers. There is a lot of promise of change but everything stays the same.

Pros

The company has some serious resources and offers lot of perks to employees, e.g. excellent benefits, tasty and affordable on-campus dining, free shuttles from San Francisco. Most employees were pleasant and there was a comfortable and casual environment.

Cons

Some of the folks you have to interact with can be brusque and outright rude because they think this style will get results. While there's some logic to this, ultimately, it's very unpleasant to have to work with these people on a regular basis. There was lots of turnover in my group which meant that new employees were coming on board who needed to be trained. This was going on at the same that work was ramping up for the group. So you ended up with too much to do, co-workers who didn't always know what they were supposed to be doing, and had folks from other groups and divisions breathing down your neck as you worked away. This led to dissatisfaction which then led to more folks leaving. I think this group finally stabilized some time after I left, but I'm not sure of the dynamics now.

Pros

Pays well, long list of benefits, some very smart co-workers

Cons

political correctness, extremely long hours all the time, burnt-out workers, little or no work-life balance; management either living in la-la land or just don't care.
