Pros

Good location in north Pinellas county and close to many things in case you have to do errands at lunch time.

Cons

Very frustrating and disappointing to be a developer here. You mostly work on bugs and there is a constant flow of them. Some people work on new development, but they get pulled off to work on bugs most of the time. There is a strong sense of mistrust at all levels of the company. It is well known that your Outlook mail and messaging are monitored by the HR guy and several people have been "busted" for writing non-business content. They keep selling their product but don't have a method for dealing with the demand. There have been some good people on board but they can't excel because the company president has to have things his way and that's pretty much what messes everything up. So, all the best people have left like rats on a sinking ship. I am looking for a new position and most of the other developers are looking as well. Not sure about other departments but I imagine they are in the same boat as us developers since they are run by the same man. They have been trying to hire people like crazy for many months now but cannot get people to join, so that leads to more pressure on those of us still here.

Pros

The best thing about Geographic Solutions is that there is no dress code. I wore shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops the whole time I worked there. Only when there are visitors do you have to dress up.

Cons

You don't get a chance to do a good job here. The emphasis is on quantity and speed: get as many things done as quickly as possible. There is tons of spaghetti code and the software is always breaking, so you are always fixing things. There were 5 development managers while I was employed there and none of them were able to change the way things are done because the owner just pushes for faster/more. QA can't test fast enough, so changes aren't fully tested and then development gets blamed. The best thing I ever did there was leave.

Pros

As a developer you are given significant freedom to develop and provide input on the process. The developer is given more individual responsibility than at most development shops. The benefit plan is competitive. Nice people to work with.

Cons

This is a software development shop with a large complex code base. It provides a significant challenge for software developers. A significant amount of classic ASP still exists in the code base.
