NO Pay increases! One of the most expensive places to live in the country and no salary increases!

Great benefits but poor management

Pros

Excellent state benefit package: generous leave, excellent retirement match, good health insurance. Work environment depends heavily on the nature of your job (professor, researcher, administrator, etc.)

Cons

As a non-academic in an academic setting I was treated as a second-class citizen, period. I also have been very unimpressed with the management of my unit and the university in general.

Pros

Flexible schedule, good immediate supervisor, educational benefits

Cons

Little recognition for hard work, Raises are rare, and basically the same for everyone, whether you work hard or just cruise. Virginia's current fiscal deficit probably means a few more years without raises. Extremely difficult to get rid of employees that are not performing.
