Pros

I loved working at Mason until the new administration came on board.

Cons

Great teachers, advisors and administrators have been forced out. There is not enough infrastructure to support the growing number of students. Mason had worked hard to raise the standards for admission. Today the goal is to get as many students, especially out-of-state, as possible in the door to the detriment of the student experience and their education. They are setting students up to fail by lowering the admission standards. Work/life balance used to be a priority at Mason but that too has gone away. There is no personal connection to employees anymore - the administration doesn't care about their people. Morale is at an all-time low.

Pros

Work-life balance, benefits, stability, product you can be proud of, nice people in general. The promise of a new era for GMU via new blood at all levels.

Cons

The culture of de-centralization contributes to a sort of campus-wide fiefdom mentality that doesn't move the university as a whole, forward. This is a behavior that has taken decades to develop, much like a weed, and as a result will take a bit of time to successfully extract as well.

Pros

Free tuition up to a certain amount. Relatively laid back summers and winter breaks.

Cons

Where to begin? Experience varies depending on the department you work for, my department is absolutely abysmal. Leadership has no vision and is only focused upwards without concern for the department. The leadership roles are filled by the incompetent and are in no way qualified for the roles they have. Those that actually do work constantly get thrown under the bus by supervisors. Few people are happy. Turnover is ridiculously high. And never in my few years of working have I ever been in a place where people have been fired, two people have been in the short time I've been here. Also university staff hasn't received a raise in over three years.
