Pros

As a student, there are many employment opportunities on campus, and a handful of them offer work-study positions. Some positions are specifically student targeted (RA's, Patriot Leaders, PA's) which offer great leadership experience and opportunities that most students overlook. I personally went through multiple positions including retail, reception-based and student leadership roles. The retail was not a good fit for me but the other two were great places to work for - clear mission, goals and fun atmosphere.

Cons

As with many companies, you will be working with under-qualified students or even full-time employees who may not understand interacting with different audiences, especially in such a diverse environment as GMU.

Pros

Great place to work. Great faculty and students. The university is growing in research and academic standing. This is an excellent place to work as a faculty member and a pleasant environment. They go out of their way to make adjuncts feel welcomed.

Cons

None other than being an adjunct carries no benefits. However that is the nature of adjunct work. Also as an adjunct you get moved around from class to class. But again not unique to GMU but to adjunct lie.

Pros

The university is growing exponentially and their is much opportunity to grow professionally with it.

Cons

There is not a strong sense of community on campus (compared to other mid-size midwestern universities I have worked at) because it is so close to DC faculty/students are involved with many other outside commitments. It is not that people are unfriendly or unpleasant, but if you are accustom to having a strong sense of community with those you work and study with this campus environment is slightly different. Part of this may also be because the university is transitioning from a "commuter school" to a full-fledged "traditional" college campus. In addition, because they are transitioning from a "commuter" to "traditional" campus some of the internal organizational structures are lacking. For example, there is no central graduate college to handle all graduate student needs across departments. This burdens the departments of study to devise their own messy processes and procedures to handle graduate issues - "traditional" universities have a central organizing body that streamlines this process.
