Pros

Graybar offered a thorough training program for students fresh out of college to enter the industry. The company is employee owned and the benefits are great. The company's longstanding reputation in the marketplace and thorough supply chain processes enhanced the company's offering to its customer base. Job stability is strong and the company is trending in the right direction.

Cons

Glass ceiling pretty much sums it all up. Although trainees we're given the opportunity to visit corporate in St Louis, the hierarchy of mgmt at the district level was clearly defined. There was a huge lack of communication between levels of mgmt. When opinions we're expressed, they did not tend to be heard. The base compensation for entry level employees was inadequate for the Boston area.

Pros

Employee owned with stock purchase with a good return. Able to keep the stock after you retire, but not if you quit or get laid off. Profit sharing up to 15% of your salary depending if the company does good. Can transfer between branches as long as there is an opening. Availability of shipping orders close to 100% is above average. Computer system is competitive. Training classes set up through computer, which are required. Branches have training classes available within the branch at times.

Cons

Local management needs to be trained on how to be managers. They need to be more pro-active and act like they are part of the branch. District management and Upper management needs to quit relying on the "numbers" more than the people. People make a branch succeed, not numbers. Pay is low, adjustments need to be addressed. This has been the situation with Graybar for a long time. The longer you stay, the harder to get a raise unless you get promoted to management. Company is too top heavy.

Pros

Great if you like working in a large slow moving company that has a super history. Opportunities abound for learning new things.

Cons

A very xenophobic culture that until recently rejected that females can actually manage. Can be a very hostile and toxic environment based on what office you are located.
