Pros

Extraordinary students and colleagues; rigorous academics; emphasis on importance of dialectic in education; excellent administration as well as latitude given to teachers at some (if not all) schools.

Cons

Abysmal pay; no formal training for middle/high school teachers; high expectations and demands on teacher's time; rapid and perhaps imprudent expansion of network. (Did I mentioned abysmal pay?)

Intellectually bracing, great colleagues; low pay and hot climates are problems

Pros

If you believe in teaching as if intellectual content matters, you can't find a better place to do it. If you still believe education is a search for truth, teach here. All your colleagues and even most of your students are on board for that mission: classical education.

Cons

No one becomes a high school teacher for the pay, but that seems particularly the case here. Most of us are right out of college, and many of us soon move on. Older teachers have mostly either made their fortune in some other business, or have secure second incomes in the family. One can only "move up" -and then, not much - by taking on administrative duties, which are not what attracted one to Great Hearts.

Thanks for your constructive feedback regarding our school leadership. We acknowledge that there are always areas of improvement for Great Hearts, including retention and recruitment of experienced and highly competent administrators. As with any school leadership role, the leadership competencies at Great Hearts are broad in scope, and in addition, we value leaders who bring the classical liberal arts vision to bear on the culture and community. That broad scope is challenging for any one person to balance, but the network invests fully in leadership development and also utilizes faculty and family surveys to help leaders develop a greater awareness for the areas of growth.
