Pros

Staff enter into their employment inspired to make a difference in children's lives. Most staff are passionate about their work and are lovely to work with.

Cons

Great Hearts hires a lot of inexperienced staff. Many new staff become overwhelmed and are not provided the support they need. Management fires staff without warning or initiating a personal growth and development plan. I don't understand how anyone is supposed to learn from mistakes if they aren't given that opportunity. Especially for such minor offenses. But new inexperienced staff are cheaper and Great Hearts is always complaining about budgets so when you connect the dots it is clear that they find hiring new staff easier that training existing employees. Staff are afraid of management. Instead of being mentors, they are disciplinarians. Even when it's unnecessary and inappropriate.

A lost company with in-fighting C-Suite

Pros

The classroom. The education works and what they are doing for children is amazing.

Cons

Sheesh. Upper management is in-fighting. They’ve had more than 5 CEOs in the past 8 years. Even the current one commutes to work from Florida, which doesn’t inspire confidence. From inside reports, the board meetings are often shouting matches.

Pros

Wonderful working environment, surrounded by highly educated teachers and overall great administrators. Supportive of the best practices in teaching, and can't tolerate BS "education-ese" methods that suck. No stupid lesson plans required. Only teach 4 classes per day full time. Small class sizes with great kids....very non-public experience. The benefits are really awesome and don't cost much per pay. I think I covered my spouse and I for $122/mo....or maybe per pay...don't remember.

Cons

Pretty much a rich-kids' school, at least at Scottsdale, of course. Way LOW pay....among the worst I've ever been offered in teaching. After the red4ed movement last spring, I think they decided to raise everybody to at least 40k. Big deal....it still sucks badly. I moved to Texas and got a $25k raise to teach math. Ironically, Great Hearts is also in Texas but offer the same crappy salaries here. No idea why people work here for that little money....there are many other public charter school choices with similar work-life arrangements that pay much more.
