My journey at Gymshark unfortunately hasn't been a great experience. I didn't have a great on boarding, and the tech was a little bit smoke and mirrors as there is a lot of work to do, in terms of efficiency, test coverage and cicd. Not that it's a bad thing as that's what you hire good people for.
Unfortunately morale was quite low in the team I was in, and it's difficult being positive in that environment. I felt that with all my experience I wasn't able to really make difference even though I felt really passionate about making things better.
I didn't feel empowered, and felt like middle management said all the right things but never backed anything up with any substance or action. I had good feedback from my colleagues and was doing well there, I just wasn't happy. I felt really restricted. I'm used to making an impact in the business I'm in, going above and beyond to push tech forwards, but always felt restricted and disconnected from other tech teams. The morale around me already seemed broken.
They are making a lot of changes, and they are restructuring with a head of engineering role coming up which if they get the right person, can instill great tech culture and really make huge improvements. I'm sure it'll get better, there is alot of good people there who want to make things better. I just was not very happy there after 6 months and time is too short really when it starts impacting how you feel
It's important to note this is from my experience in tech. It is a large business and does not reflect on other departments.
