Pervasive Leadership Problems

Pros

You bond with some really good people over mutual frustrations related to "leadership."

Cons

There is no incentive/benefit to having a brain at HCA. In fact, it appears they prefer you not have a brain. Nothing at HCA is based upon merit. Those with experience, education, and knowledge typically get stuck on the front lines... forever. HCA much prefers to put people in "leadership" positions who have no knowledge of what they're "leading" to use as puppets for the primary overall goal--as much profit as possible. Some of these "leaders" know they are being used as puppets, but many do not and therein lies the real danger. People walking around without brains thinking they're the smartest person in the room can wreak much more havoc than those who know they're being used. There are many problems with this insidious practice, but the main one being these people are so shortsided and inexperienced their decisions to enhance profit often only do so on paper. In other words, "leadership" will frequently make kneejerk decisions in the name of the mighty dollar then come to find out the decision actually resulted in a net loss. Meanwhile, these decisions affect people's lives, not that HCA cares about lives. So, as "leadership" is creating more "leadership" (VPs, AVPs, CNOs, ACNOs, RVPs, ARVPs, VPs of Operations, and on and on) to join their shared delusion of grandeur, literally everyone else who encounters/interacts with HCA suffers.

Pros

HCA is an amazing company that truly believes in developing their employees and advocates for career advancement within the organization.

Cons

As with any company of HCA's size, there are many department needed to get the job done and this can lead to silos of information at times.

Pros

-good selection of benefits -coffee machines -corporate office building is really nice -plenty of parking -front-desk security personnel are really nice

Cons

-Accounting managers lack basic communication skills -There is no work/life balance. The workload is unrealistic, as I worked over 60 hours in a typical week in order to meet expectations -Accounting managers pit staff accountants against each other. That is, they emotionally manufacture competition in order to maximize production. Their goal is to instill fear in employees regarding job security so that they work non-stop. -Inadequate and inimical training procedures fail to provide direction to the most critical of tasks. Training often delivered incorrect guidance, which the trainee only finds out after being reprimanded for the mistake. -The various accounting systems used are archaic and needlessly convoluted. HCA is a leading healthcare corporation but I've worked with more efficient systems in multiple small businesses. -You will be written up if you have an excused medical or family emergency. I missed 2 days (not consecutively) because my father had a massive stroke. Even though I provided proper communication, I received a written warning for the excused absences. The same thing happened when I missed time due to getting COVID-19. I only missed one day and worked from home through the rest of my sickness, but a written warning was issued anyway. -Accounting managers will fabricate and outright lie about employees performance in order to build a case for termination. They do this through goalpost moving, gaslighting, and instructing employees to do things the wrong way. I understand that this is a serious accusation, but potential employees must be aware of these management practices. -Mask mandates, while no longer required, were not enforced throughout the pandemic. -I was ultimately terminated in May 2021 based on performance, but no specific measurable details were provided. The termination was cold meritless and the managers explanation was dodgy. I gave the position 100% every single day and was good at my job. I was fired for no reason.
