Pros

This is one of the best companies I've ever worked for, hands down. I've worked for some really large and highly reputable companies in the past and HCSS by far is the best. I have grown personally and professionally more with my time at HCSS, which is one of the biggest strengths of this company, you can really get out what you put into it. If you commit yourself, this company will enable you to do great things. I can list off all of the perks, there are a lot, but at the end of the day, I don't stay because of ping pong tables, dog kennels, flat screen tvs or a gym, it's because I'm able to do the work I love, lead change, and help grow this company. There's a lot to be said that every employee is a part owner of the company, it gives everyone a stake in the game, so to speak. For me, it helped me trust the company right from the start, which is very hard to do for anyone. If you're interested by the tangible perks, then don't apply here. If you really want to do something with your career, grow your skills as a professional then this is the right place for you and you will be rewarded for it. Tip: If you do apply here, take the interview seriously, do your research, and approach it with an open mind. The biggest thing we look for outside of culture fit is if you're coachable and willing to learn and that applies for every level of position, if you can't do that then chances are you aren't a good fit or won't last long with us.

Cons

This is a great company to work for, as I mentioned above, you will become part owner and enjoy all of the perks. So you must understand that the culture that is created here is one from a family perspective, an ownership thinking culture, which is why the hiring process has to be selective. When we hire here, it's for the long term, not short term which is why the interview process is so intense. It's tough, I will not sugar coat it, it's highly selective, tiring, and intense but if you're committed to it, then that will show and you will not have a problem....as long as you pass the assessment test. The test is what it is, take it, pass it, and move on but don't overlook it. The company has been around for almost 30 years now, the CEO created it from scratch. If you look at people who have done the same, built companies from nothing, their reviews aren't always going to be pretty. IE: Most CEOs in North America. Our CEO gets some tough criticism at times, but who doesn't in that position. Yes, he can come off harsh at times, but remember it's always business, never personal. I've listed it in the Cons sections for one reason, if you take feedback personally then don't apply here. Referring to a Friend: Understanding our hiring process, it's hard to recommend HCSS to a friend. While we may like our friends, it's hard to take the "friend" hat off when looking at them objectively. By all means, our referral system is excellent, but you need to first educate anyone who applies of our process and the rigors of it. If you do that then I give it a thumbs up, if not which many don't, then thumbs down. Even if your friend is a perfect candidate, checks off all the boxes, it's still no guarantee that they will be brought on board.

Pros

Probably a great opportunity for entry level marketing, programming, etc. Their average hire age is 25 (which should be in the con section). Great potential but....

Cons

I was hired to make some serious changes and I reported directly to the president. That did not sit well with others in upper management, which made things very difficult - but that was anticipated. I don't think these guys are going to get to the next level in their industry unless there is a massive change in their develop direction, how they are handling their legacy products, and how they address the needs of their market. They might be at their peak. From what I experienced, the necessary changes may be impossible without the president (and founder) leaving and staying away - plus a large group of other management. Time will tell. Maybe they will do what needs to be done when another company does what they should be doing - and have the ability to do. But in reality, most other software companies that successfully developed out of the 80s, but have failed to overcome their legacy software are in the same boat. As a whole, the employees are very inexperienced. Almost every upper-level manager has been moved up and several are very young and green. Such managers are very easy to control and command low salaries. Many of the experienced ones are quietly riding out their time. I would agree with most all of the management cons provided here, and would assume that most of the pros are from younger employees. If you are a seasoned software professional and/or executive manager, I would advise you to stay away or use great caution. Have a good backup plan or a great employment contract that will protect you.

Pros

Most of the people are great to work with They have an ok onsite gym and offer onsite workout classes You can work from home if your manager lets you

Cons

Somewhat childish environment which can make it hard to get work done. There is a clear difference in how the development side of the company and the services side of the company is run. The development side has the upper hand.
