Pros

The 401K, health benefits and stock options.

Cons

HDR is supposed to be an employee own company. It may be that way on paper, but the employees are definitely not treated that way. This is especially true in the Information Technology Group (ITG). The problems here start with the attitude of the CIO and are replicated down to the Directors and the Area Managers. IT Support Managers are driven hard and are expected to drive their staff beyond the breaking point. Upper management continues to expect more and appreciates and acknowledges staff even less. Numerous IT staff has left even from the corporate office in Omaha, stating their displeasure with the way they were being treated. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

Pros

Great people to work with. Expert engineers are always available throughout the company and great network in place to reach out to anyone. Matrix organization is followed, so you can make career moves in different directions. Work is most of the time challenging, once you gain the trust of senior engineers, you can start running your own little projects but they are always there to review, check and help you if you need.

Cons

Depending on the office size and client base, career development can be a struggle. If there are too many project managers and not enough junior level engineers doing the work, you can stay in the same position for a while. No clear advancement structure. The "you can be anything you want to be" attitude can stall your advancement if you do not know what you want out of your career and you do not have a close relationship with a senior level person to help you understand and guide. You really need to speak up, otherwise I have seen many quit because they can not advance - especially when there is no strong leadership in the group.

Pros

Salary on par with industry, lots of different projects to work on, descent benefits, employee owned, stock price has done well, lots of internal training.

Cons

Large company problems...focus on growth and bottom line draws management further from actual work. Tend to promote staff too soon with not enough project experience...occasionally with less experience than the group they are supervising. Not all project managers know how to manage staff. Staff development varies depending on who you work under.
