Pros

HNI has several member companies that work toward a common goal. They treat their employees as members rather than a number and have great advancement opportunities within all available organizations, including 'outside' companies like Hearth & Home and Hickory Business Furniture.

Cons

While the overall company is solid, member companies seem to let batches of employees go every two to three years, even if things aren't going particularly badly. This can lead to damaged relationships and poorer morale, especially when the employees affected had no real reason to be selected other than being in the wrong position at the wrong time.

Pros

Decent pay, profit sharing when company is making money. HNI is good for the local community and the community in China working for Lamex. Small town living the commute is non stressful and the overall city life is safe and affordable.

Cons

Too many contractors, top heavy with Directors, Managers, and Supervisors. Its the buddy system who you know and are friends with determines if you move up and you could spend years doing the same thing with nowhere to move forward or even move laterally. Benefits are below average for a mid to large corporation. HR-MCR is non existent for it's employees as they are just trying to move up the ladder to higher management, definitely their own agenda. Very LARGE turnover in the last 3 years. CIO is only interested in the contracting to save money, and the Oracle transition and not with day to day operations and the employees who keep IT and the business running. I would not recommend working in IT at HNI

First, I want to thank you for taking the time to give us some very honest feedback. I'm sorry that your experience at HNI hasn't matched our intention of being a great place to work for our members. We value and consider all feedback and we'll keep finding ways to improve, but I want to address some of the specific concerns you've raised. We've made some significant technology and strategy investments related to IT in the last few years, and at times it can be difficult to balance both the transformational initiatives we're working on, as well as maintaining our strong focus on constantly delivering day-to-day operational excellence. We rely on all members and our leaders to provide candid feedback to ensure we keep things in balance and deliver on all fronts. If you have specific issues you're concerned about, I strongly encourage you to discuss them with your manager, one of our IT leaders, or with our Member and Community Relations team. We've done our best to develop strong leadership and MCR teams - they genuinely care about your feedback, your work experience and your success. You also raised some concerns about career growth. This summer, all members will be invited to participate in career workshops designed to help members understand and consider the career opportunities available within HNI and our operating companies. The workshops will provide some tips for having discussions with your manager and leadership team about how you'd like to grow in your current job and what you might like to try next. We'll also be rolling out a new skills assessment process within IT this spring to work on getting to know our members better - what they're great at, and how we can provide targeted training and development opportunities in areas where they might be looking to build their skills. Again - thank you for honesty and your ongoing contributions.
