Pros

The work itself is rewarding. Having the opportunity to help people who are in tough seasons of their lives is a great experience. I have developed a much more rounded worldview since starting this job and have been able to apply the compassion and patience I have gained to my everyday life. There is nothing better than seeing the growth of a patient from their admission to their discharge date. Lives are changed here!

Cons

The administration seems to care less and less about staff and patients as time goes on. We are incredibly understaffed, likely due to low pay relative to the work we do and difficulty working with upper management. It seems that the merge with Hackensack took a lot of culture out of the hospital and providing the most quality care for our patients seems to no longer be the top priority.

Pros

Excellent pay and wonderful benefits!

Cons

The same day I started I was warned that the MICU/CCU nurses are treacherous. I didn’t want to believe it. For most of my time there, they tried to get me fired. Don’t get me wrong, I made mistakes. I’m human, but I didn’t deserve to be fired. The nurses’ mistakes were more serious than mine. I remember one nurse resuscitated a patient who was a DNR (Do not resuscitate). Almost every week I had to meet with someone in HR to fight for my job. At home, I’m almost having breakdowns because I was too afraid to show up for work. My advice, work anywhere in Hackensack Hospital except MICU/CCU. It’s very toxic.

Pros

Medically complex, high acuity and diverse patient populations. Lots of learning opportunities. A good place to acquire technical and soft skills that will make one a more valuable nurse. Teaching hospital with strong resident teams and attending physicians who actually enjoy teaching.

Cons

High turn over, lots of travel RNs that come and go. NMs/ANMs/nurse leaders who do not know how to properly support staff nurses (i.e. micromanaging, no regular check-ins with staff members, excessively long huddles and staff meetings). Managers overreliance on charge RNs and overuse of preceptors (charge RNs and preceptors are not compensated well for what they have to do). Outdated facilities and break rooms. Unreliable technology (scanners, beds, COWs, and keyboards are constantly broken and not fixed in a timely manner).
