Pros

The environment , coworkers, and certain benefits. There is always something different everyday. You will learn about who we are as a company and what we do to keep our customers content with obtaining the things they love: books , music, and media.

Cons

Benefits have quickly eroded or are completely eliminated over the last few years. It's becoming too expensive to afford insurance on the pay we receive which doesn't match the rate of inflation or the cost of living. Management is a joke, all they care about now are online sales and think somehow that we are going to compete with Amazon. This is never going to happen. You will be singled out if you continually bring up concerns about problems.

Pros

If you want good health benefits and a chummy work environment, Half Price Books is the place. It is hippy/hipster paradise where you get hands-on with old texts and rare/weird movies and memorabilia. If you find a location with good co-workers, you'll have a good time.

Cons

The company does not operate by its own rules. It promotes environmental awareness, but I worked at a location that literally threw thousands of brand new books away over the course of 3 days while moving store locations. There wasn't enough room to put the books in the new store, so instead of donating or recycling them, we threw them all in the garbage. The kicker? When students from the local university began pulling the books out of the dumpster (which only had books in it - we had gotten an extra dumpster just for all the books), our managers called the police on them. Then it started raining later that night. Thousands of brand new books were destroyed. Since the manager of that location now has a better position at a bigger location, I can only assume that this type of behavior is encouraged or rewarded by the company as a whole.

Wonderful and awful

Pros

Okay benefits, possible quarterly bonuses depending on sales, birthday money, anniversary money to be used in stores. Fifty percent off most merch. Job is straightforward with barely a learning curve. If you're lucky, you change positions every few hours so you're not stuck doing one thing all day. Starting pay rate is 11 an hour, 35 hours for full time.

Cons

No movement, upper management always looks for ways to write people up to the point that just having a phone outline in your pocket can result in a write up. Pay raises are VERY difficult, and if you had any write up you will not get a raise, but the raises are only ten cents or less anyway. Insurance is expensive, HR is hard to get a hold of, underappreciated for the stressful work you do by customers and upper staff. Do be careful talking with others, if management catches a whiff you'll be pulled into the office and chided and redirected depending. Also, unions are looked at as negative, as is talking about pay disparity.
