Pros

40 Hour Weeks Guaranteed Employee Discount One-hour lunch break Opportunity to hold and check-out items E-commerce experience Customers were pretty easy to deal with Management will try to help you succeed in the beginning

Cons

- "3 strike rule" for temporary booksellers - management expects you to be flawless on the second week - Management not flexible at all with schedules. You have have to be available at all times. I knew someone who was let go because he had the flu. - you will get written up for insignificant mistakes (i.e being one dollar short counting cash, failing to initial checks, there's so many opportunities to screw up.) - If you don't fit in with the culture of hpb, management will find a way to get rid of you. - Gets very boring during slow customer traffic, you will want to find busy work - Culture of favoritism - Other employees will say negative things about you and make sure you hear it

Hit or miss depending on location and management

Pros

Extremely laid back environment as far as retail goes. Coworkers and customers were mostly cool, management was flexible about working around my school schedule. The job is easy but varied enough to keep it interesting.

Cons

The quality of the work environment varies widely by location. Some managers are helpful and positive; some are an utter nightmare. Some shift leaders are great; some sit in the office on their phones all night. The company is not as profitable as it could be due mostly to unwise decisions made on the corporate level. Store employees suffer the most, with increased responsibility and slashed benefits.

Pros

Good benefits, great discounts/free merchandise. There are a lot of awesome people working there, but they are all at the bottom (where you will most likely be as well)

Cons

Little opportunity for advancement, as they hire externally for management positions. Management unconcerned with the ideas of their subordinates.
