Pros

Half-off discount on almost everything in store for employees, first crack at incoming books/media.

Cons

Management never allowed me to take my full breaks or lunches, insulted my appearance in front of other employees and customers, and withheld my original final paycheck from me for over a month after I quit because I quit without providing notice. Additionally, because the MOD (manager on duty) changes every hour, there is zero accountability among the managers, and employees ignore the schedule at will.

Pros

The co-workers were the only redeeming aspect of this job, and even that started to go downhill by the end of my tenure.

Cons

Where to begin? Management is straight up evil and has ZERO regard for employee's health or happiness. You will get fired if you are one minute late (I'm not exaggerating, my co-worker commuted over an hour to get to work, and got fired because her train broke down). You will get fired for getting sick (again, not exaggerating, my co-worker got fired for having pneumonia). You will get written up for not being fast enough, for having an opinion about your section, for being hurt. This company does NOT care about you. They will use and abuse you and pay you the bare minimum until they don't need you anymore, and then they will hire someone else to take your place. They love turnover because new hires don't know how horrible they are...yet. If you are lucky enough to have a perfect year (not late once, didn't use any sick time, broke your back keeping up with the unrealistic workload) than you MIGHT get a 25 cent raise. I hurt myself bad on the job, and my manager didn't say a word about it and didn't offer any information on workman's comp or my workplace rights. This company may have once been a decent place to work, they may have once respected their employees, but those days are ancient history. In the time I spent there, I watched most of my fellow employees quit or get fired. When it was finally my turn, I couldn't believe I had put up with that for so long. I still have nightmares about that place and I will never step foot in another HPB as long as I live.
