Managers are out of touch

Pros

Good people at lower levels, good work life balance. Many of the employees are friends outside of work

Cons

Tons of inefficiencies and terrible people that get kept on due to tenure/inability for management to get rid of them. Lots of favoritism amongst management; if you do not belong to a country club and/or did not go to private school on the Main Line, it will be tough for you to connect. Some of the Executives are extreme snobs who view talking with junior team members are beneath them, declining to acknowledge their existence in meetings and hallways. A lot of lip service is paid to the culture but majority of the people above VP are pretty unfriendly.

Low pay, bad culture

Pros

Learned a lot about private markets, there are good and smart people working at this firm. The company makes great money, hiring is tight, so you will never be laid off.

Cons

I want to clarify the "Best Place to Work" award from Pension & Investment is for finance firm with 100-499 employees, and Hamilton Lane is mentioned on the list, but not #1-5, it is deceptive, and the culture does not match up to what they claim. The company does well, but management's focus has been on cutting cost ever since the company went public. They are so focused on keeping the share price high that they are willing to sacrifice employee's wellbeing. There is a opaque pay and promotion structure, your manager can sympathize with your low comp but there's nothing he/she could do about it. A good portion of the front office looks back office like they are second class citizens. The culture is jammed down our throats because the image of being a big happy family is what helps the firm get new business, but in does not come in practice in reality. If you get hired here, your job will likely change continuously, you never know what's getting thrown your way or what change management has decided. A lot of the teams never seem to get up to speed, it becomes a continuous cycle of training people, telling them what they did wrong, and cleaning up after them. Work-life balance is preached here, but again, what's preached is not what's practiced.
