Pros

At a time when employee healthcare is passe, Hannaford actually provides some relatively good benefits, at least in regards to its fulltime staff. A hired nurse makes the rounds every month or so to discuss health issues with associates. There is some paid vacation time also.

Cons

There is a rather large disconnect between people working on the ground and those in corporate, even when it comes to customer issues and particularly when it comes to store maintenance issues. Store management does not participate in the daily routine and I have received numerous customer complaints about them being incapable of communicating, in regards to both the single store I work in and also when making calls to the corporate offices. The Associate Relations Managers are rarely available. Access to necessary items such as uniforms, box cutters, sales signs is often denied regardless of whether you may need them, or completely unavailable due to not having management on duty with access to the locks. As mentioned before, favoritism is a huge factor which needs to be addressed. You are not promoted based on work ethic or capabilities, but rather how well you get along with the manager, often on a personal level. Also lots of family favoritism, and thus management shifts due to rules regarding family members not being allowed to work together as management. Even if your calculated production levels are over 100% you will be reprimanded for missing something small, be it crushing cardboard or having your name tag fall off. At the same time more important subjects, such as broken freezers and product audits, are treated more nonchalantly.
