Pros

I had a good nurse manager. She was a great ally. I guess there were pretty good opportunities for overtime as well (there ER staff was so overworked I think they had a high turnover rate.) They sent out a mass email that there would be overtime to RNs that signed up to help and LBJ and Ben Taub ERs. I don’t know about you, but I would pay money never to step foot into LBJ or Ben Taub’s ER. I mean, there was a poor man that died on a toilet waiting for care at Ben Taub, he should’ve been triaged and, by his symptoms, should not have been left to wait for over 24 hours.

Cons

Cannot name one good thing about this organization. Senior management is pushing the narrative that they’ve improved their practices and reputation but it’s all a facade. At its core, Harris Health is a crumbling, out of touch, organization that is vehemently against growth and change. The older employees, in my experience, alienate and belittle newer employees and students that come to our facilities to learn. Doctors at the clinic I worked at witnessed the hostile work environment and reported it to HR, but again, nothing cane of it. I was hired on as a charge nurse but was unable to receive any acceptance from staff (they would even erase my name from the white boards around the facility). They turned against my manager when she was new and complained to upper management about every change she made. Even the HR rep that came to do my exit interview (and was over 30 minutes late with no communication) was rude to me when I spoke honestly of my experience. I informed her that there were coworkers of mine that openly make animal cruelty and transphobic jokes and the facility could use some diversity training but I was told BY THE HR REP THAT I “should take openly to people about my concerns instead of talking behind their back because it could’ve just been a joke”. I was appalled. My nurse manager was sad to see me go, she tried to facilitate a meeting with the CNO to discuss my experience but her assistant never returned my calls. I wasn’t even surprised at that point. I tell everyone I can to stay far away. Harris county deserves better. Do yourself a favor and do not accept a position here. You can thank me later
