Pros

Scheduling is very flexible Hourly rate is better than most jobs in my area

Cons

If you are a front end associate, corporate does everything in their power to prevent you from getting to know your coworkers. Every moment you are in the store, no matter how busy you are or how much free time you have, talking to your coworkers about anything non-work related is completely forbidden. At my location, it has gotten so bad that they would rather have you stand in front of an endcap, endlessly moving things around than have a 2 minute conversation with your coworker. Every 4 months or so, corporate decides that they aren't making enough money, so they come down to the store and force the CSM to cut hours down to a certain point. Corporate would rather have lines 10 people long during a rush with 1 cashier on register than put another person on the schedule. Corporate then complains that we aren't working hard enough, that the hours cuts shouldn't matter if we just work faster. I am one of the fastest cashiers at my location, and there is no possible way for me to keep up the demand when this happens. When you are not cashiering or getting carts out of the parking lot, you are assigned to do "closing tasks" which range from important to completely useless. When it slows down around 7 pm, the customer service clerks and front end associates all have certain tasks that they are meant to do. At any other job, finishing these tasks would mean that you are allowed to chat with your coworkers, help customers, or generally have a period of rest. At Harris Teeter, finding free time means that you are not working hard enough. Since I started working 2 years ago, there have been about 7 different major tasks that front end has to complete that were not a requirement before. It has gotten to the point that front end associates are expected to do the jobs of other departments because management thinks we don't have enough work already. Altogether, if you want your job to make you happy at any point in time, do not come to Harris Teeter. Management and Corporate work in conjunction to make sure that you are not able to find any enjoyment while working here, no matter how small.
