Pros

The best reason for me are the people I work with. Harris Teeter really does a great job in hiring the best out of the people that apply. Everybody knows everybody and I have developed so many amazing relationships with some of the people I work with that I will never forget. If you work at Harris Teeter you WILL make a lot of new friends because everyone is friendly here. That is why the work environment is a lot more positive than other grocery stores, because of the friendliness. Harris Teeter pays better than every other major grocery store around here. No questions asked. They have some good benefits, especially the profit-sharing bonus that you get twice a year. Scheduling is very flexible. It's easy to get the days off that you want to get off.

Cons

Harris Teeter has been cutting hours for about a year now. Apparently its something coporate has required the stores to do, but it really hurts us. It makes the employees work VERY strenuous hours, because its almost like we are constantly under-staffed. Almost EVERY TIME I look up from my register there is at least one or two people in line. It's just really hard to stay motivated when you can't stop and sit back for even 20 seconds to just relax a little. It is hard to get a raise...I make 7.85 an hour and I have worked here for 1.5 years. I found out NEW cashiers were making 8.35 an hour and I was infuriated. I trained some of them. It's almost insulting. I have been trying to get a raise for months now...they always claim to be on a "raise freeze." How about some of that BS. Management is really dependent on each store individually, but the whole senior management in my store has been overhauled in my time here. I don't like most of the new managers.

Pros

The best reasons to work at Harris Teeter, for a part-time employee ,are the benefits packages. These include a 401k matching and a compensation that is higher than the average in this industry. The interaction with the consumers usually brings a positive atmosphere in the stores. Being able to serve someone to the fullest and their appreciation is what keeps most of the part-time employees going throughout the day. Being able to build up friendships that go beyond the workplace is also a positive aspect of working at Harris Teeter. There is positive recognition by the "Customer Service" management for working hard.

Cons

The management at the stores are highly undertrained for their positions. The company opens new stores with under trained management that leads to chaos in the opening weekends. Managers tend to avoid contact with part-time employees. Some of the stores that are new are very understaffed which causes strenuous hours for the full-time and part-time employees. In the store that I had experience most of my work, the management had certain issues with hiring certain ethnic groups for their store. There were open, key word open here, interviews before the store opened and I was denied an interview with the company because there were no more spaces open. I did some research, and I had a colleague of mine apply for a position and they were offered an interview at "their convenience". If applying for a part-time position, there are more times than not were they ask you to come in to work without prior notice. There are also tendencies for schedule changes that are unannounced because the managers that handle scheduling have passed the budgeted hours for the week.

Pros

Growing company that's not afraid to promote qualified candidates and/or demote unqualified candidates. Do a great job and you'll have a great job for as long as you like. Harris Teeter is a great place to work and grow in an upscale grocery market, which withstands all economic downfall prevailing with bottom line profits. That means, when industry prices go up and profits go down :Harris Teeter has stability in all markets in which they operate. Strong store sales and great industry waste percent ensures our success.

Cons

If you're expecting to have bankers hours, Harris Teeter is not the career for you. Retail does not stop unless it's Christmas. So be ready to work.
