Hazelcast Is No Longer Open-Source Friendly

Pros

The community but it's declining

Cons

1- Abandoning Open Source: Key features like the CP Subsystem are now locked behind Enterprise Edition, alienating developers. 2- Lack of Innovation: Minimal progress, with features stuck in beta and old tech repackaged instead of improved. 3- Leadership Instability: Frequent leadership changes prioritize short-term sales over innovation. 4- Market Decline: With weak OSS support and stagnant development, Hazelcast is losing relevance. 5- Low Morale: Engineers feel disengaged due to the lack of open-source involvement and product stagnation. 6- Version Transparency Issues: Hazelcast quietly replaced version 5.5.3 with 5.5.4, raising concerns about stability and communication. Final Verdict: Hazelcast has moved away from open-source and innovation, prioritizing paywalled features. If you need cutting-edge, community-driven technology, look elsewhere.

Pros

Solid product that performs well

Cons

No new features for over 4 years, Engineering efforts wasted on discarded projects for SaaS release and AI initiatives. The new CEO, the former lawyer for the company, is arrogant and nasty to anyone who doesn’t play yes-man to him.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are pleased to hear that you still find Hazelcast to be a solid and high-performing product; maintaining that core technical excellence remains a top priority for us. We acknowledge your frustrations regarding the pace of new feature releases and the direction of our engineering efforts. While we were pleased with our significant product release in October 25, we are working to ensure our future roadmap is both clear and impactful. We take your comments regarding leadership and our internal culture very seriously. We strive to develop a culture of collaboration and open dialogue, where differing perspectives are valued rather than discouraged. Your feedback is a vital part of that process as we work to improve our decision-making and transparency at the executive level. If you would like to share more specific thoughts on how we can better support our technical teams, our People Team would welcome the conversation. We appreciate your contributions to the product and wish you the best in your career.

Pros

Superior talent from all over the world. Experienced and knowledgeable managers. I will learn a lot here and advance my career. The atmosphere and culture at Hazelcast is an energetic and determined one, with an emphasis on teamwork and camaraderie. Active lifestyle is encouraged. Managers play basketball, tennis and soccer on a regular basis.

Cons

Mid-Peninsula is a tough place to get to from just about anywhere. CalTrain is slow and crowed. East Bay and South Bay employees struggle with the absurd traffic.
