Pros

1) Culture of Partnership: HealthPartners is a relationship-oriented, collaborative culture. I truly valued getting to know my colleagues - both in professional and personal capacities - across the organization. The majority of colleagues are dedicated to doing good work, willing to share information, and help you succeed. 2) Benefits: Hands down, HealthPartners has strong healthcare, retirement and PTO benefits. It's a company that encourages work/life balance. For example, I was able to purchase 10 additional PTO days each year and always found time to use all my PTO.

Cons

1) Job Title Deflation: Job Titles in Quality Improvement, Process Engineering, Analyst, and Project Management roles too often don't translate to other companies or industries. So many highly skilled and experienced colleagues at senior or principal levels have job titles that end in "Coordinator" or "Specialist." For example, principal- and senior-level Project Managers are often called a "Senior Project Administrator," "Organizational Improvement Project Specialist," "Senior Quality Coordinator" or "Quality Improvement Specialist." These job titles completely devalue our skills, experience, and ability to deliver value. 2) Training Devalued: While HealthPartners is a great place to gain incredible hands-on experience, the culture doesn't provide pathways for employees to stay up-to-date in their professional disciplines and certifications (ie, Lean/Six Sigma Green or Black Belt, Agile CSM/CPO, Prosci, PMP, Data Science, etc.). Not only does this lead to teams not being on the cutting edge of their professional disciplines and speaking a shared language, it also makes it challenging to find comparable positions once you leave HealthPartners.

Pros

Decent benefits, strong local presence in Minnesota. Pay was mediocre for my experience and education.

Cons

Lost paper work, false promises by managers. You’ll have to do HR’s job for them. Some of the more seasoned employees thought they could just sit around and yell about how no one does work but them. Ironically, the people who’ve been there the longest seem to be the worst in the company. It seems like there is high turn over, and very little cooperation with newer hires.

Pros

Union can be beneficial in terms of being protected. Great healthcare benefits. I was in the SEIU union, $135 a month capped for the family medical premium option. If it’s just you, you get free healthcare through Healthpartners. My coworkers are great, and very knowledgeable.

Cons

Union can bite you in the butt. Union means everything is based on seniority hours. If you’re trying to get a spot somewhere, you have to wait in line until you’ve reached seniority. SEIU union members do not have short-term disability. Your parental leave is unpaid for. You have up to 4 months to stay with your newborn, but it’s all unpaid for, so as a newer employer, if you don’t have PTO, etc, you’re going to be unpaid. Most parents will just do the bare minimum with their children. There are no ophthalmic coverage, just a “discount” at the clinics. If you are on-call, you may not even get hours for months. D/t, seniority employees get dibs on hours first. You can have someone who was working full time for years, who decides that they just want to float around now. They have the most hours in your bidding pool. During holidays or when kids are back in school when everyone wants more money, you can guarantee that those seniors will pick up all the shifts and you’ll go months without working.
