Pros

Discounts on magazine subscriptions, decent time off allowance, OK benefits

Cons

HIGH TURNOVER at Hearst Newspapers!!! In the sales department, the revenue goals are constantly changing. There is no structure - random numbers are just picked from the sky. Compensation is also changing every other month, making goals unattainable, therefore, you may no money. Management spends too much time on meaningless training tactics, and they expect you to be out of the office 90% of the time when there are no resources available to be able to spend that much time away from your desk.

Pros

You aren't required to work non stop, good work/life balance. Nice people depending on where in the company you work. Decent holiday length.

Cons

Bad management/management that have never been sufficiently trained, doesn't invest in employees, pay is terrible and won't change for a long time. A lot of de-motivated employees, seen as just a number not a person. Will dodge yearly appraisals like the plague.

Pros

At least when I was there, Hearst was pretty much the only one of the major publishers who had a clue about what to do with digital (esp compared to Conde Nast and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia). Smart people, and pretty nimble about technological changes. The CMS was custom built in-house, so it was much easier to get problems worked on and upgraded than with outside systems. And the Hearst Tower, what a glorious building! So much natural light. And the corporate gym. Oh, the corporate gym. That was the best perk I had at a job ever. EVER!

Cons

Salaries. They are really on the low side of competitive. Also, not much room for advancement. Have heard of lots of changes in Digital lately that have led to low, low morale.
