Pros

Great benefits. Salaries are fair. Once you are in one magazine, it's possible to switch to another one easily. Once you are at Hearst, the company looks out for you.

Cons

In magazines, long hours are expected. The goal is to get the mag out on time, no matter how late you have to work.

Pros

Discounted Hearst magazine subscription. Free tickets to events that the company sponsors. Nice co-workers. 401 K match at six percent. Okay health benefits.

Cons

You will not make a dime in commissions unless you meet your quota, which is unrealistic. You are not allowed to contact or up-sell any business you sold once the contract has been signed. They have a team that maintains your accounts and gets credit for up-selling the businesses you brought in. There are no clearly defined territories so everyone is stepping over each other's toes. They have a 50 percent cancellation rate, so chargebacks will eat away at any meager commissions you receive. You will basically live on your base salary. It is one step forward, two steps back. High turnover, high burnout rate.

Pros

Serious about news coverage. Loves winning awards and being competitive. Values local television. Some really impressive stations with long track records. You can be proud of working for Hearst.

Cons

Tendency to be behind the times. Slow to respond to industry changes, such as social media. Hard to feel like there's growth opportunities within the company. Virtually no cooperation with other Hearst Corporation properties.
