Pros

The industry is really interesting. It is definitely not glamorous or tidy at all which means not as many people are entering into it. However, that means there are a ton of job opportunities, thus job security. If you show that you are a motivated, valuable employee and have a good boss, they will invest in you both with training and money. The people are quirky and are definitely a different breed (including myself in this). However, they are so down to earth, kind, and family oriented. If you ask to get involved with different areas of work (might be unique to my position) they will do their best to getting you experience in that department. I'd say sometimes this is boss dependent. The culture at the plant level seems to be work hard, play hard. Often there are long hours some weeks and others a bit lighter. Hard part about the industry and company is that work load really depends on position, department, and location. I really enjoy that everyday is different. Learning this industry has been like drinking from a firehose - an enormous amount to learn in every aspect. As a trainee, your progress is tracked by the corporate leaders and reports filed by different leadership members are completed and reviewed by the "big dogs". This can be overwhelming at times and exciting at others.

Cons

The work culture depends where you are in the company. Structurally, it is a very corporate environment, but if you are in operations or work closely with them sometime it can be the wild wild west (good and bad). The amount of training and attention to personal development seems to depend on your boss. Although I think if you meet the right people you could advocate for yourself and get somewhere. For many years, the culture was don't spend money just make it. This resulted in many things (plants, equipment, etc) to be run to death, patched together again, then run to death. It can be really frustrating because you need to spend money to make money. The new corporate leaderships is moving in that direction, but I suspect everything is now requiring tons of money to fix that you might feel neglected. Your plant might not be the biggest producer thus they'll allocate the most money to the money makers first.
