Pros

- enticing company mission and vision - for a start-up, company already has a strong reputation and brand - smart, passionate, collaborative colleagues - transparent, open, culture modeled by department heads and leads - good mix of new grads and industry veterans (lots of opportunity for mentorship) - fast-paced, little red tape, support to get things done - backed by respected industry leader Illumina, VCs and partners - unlimited vacations which people take, free lunches, small touches like celebrating birthdays/ new employees/ any reason to eat food - people want you to succeed in your role and celebrate small wins - great health and medical benefits

Cons

depending on your personality these may seem like cons (for others, these are not): - fast-paced, short deadlines - wear lots of hats and projects may change on the fly (need to be flexible) - spot light is on you and your work - typical 9-5 does not exist but rather flexible hours that are driven by individual and workload/deadlines - fast growth and lots of changes every week, month - expected to take ownership and initiative for yourself

There's something special about this place!

Pros

Helix is truly a great place to work. Everyone here believes that there is something uniquely special about what we are building. A few of the many reasons to work here include: - Doing something that matters. - Work with people who are passionate and willing to share their expertise. - No shortage of tough, challenging problems to work on. - The ability to take ownership of projects you care about. - Great colleagues who genuinely care about each other and enjoy spending time together. - Leadership truly values every employee and they regularly put their money where their mouth is to prove it. - Transparency is not just a value, it's built into the company and the way we operate. - Building the future! At some point, all people will get sequenced. If it's not Helix (although we're pretty sure it will be us), it will be someone else and it's exciting to be part of the team designing that future.

Cons

Helix probably shares cons with many small startups. For someone with the right fit, these cons probably won't seem too bad: - We work hard and people put in long hours, but pressure doesn't come from above it's generally self motivated. - Expectations can sometimes be unclear or change quickly. - Formal personal/professional development systems have not yet been put in place.

Pros

Helix is truly a unique company. It's a startup, with the culture and excitement to match, but has many resources of a big company because it is backed by Illumina (the leader in DNA sequencing) and investors with deep pockets. Helix is simultaneously a tech company, a genetics company, and a consumer company. The mission is ambitious and world-changing - you will know you are making a difference. - Team is passionate and mission-driven. The mission and values are real. - Incredibly smart colleagues. You will be surrounded by some of the best in a diverse range of fields. Engineering, design, genetics, bioinformatics, marketing, business development, finance...the list goes on! - Startup culture: free lunch, lots of snacks, unlimited vacation (and most people take time off), small teams, everyone wearing lots of different hats, and lots of passion and excitement - Best of a big company: backing of Illumina, resources to spend when it's on the critical path, 4% 401k matching, great health benefits - Company takes care of the team. For instance, when moving offices from SF to San Carlos, company set up a shuttle to help the commute for SF employees, which is very unusual for a startup - Lots of responsibility. Everyone is given as much as they can handle, and encouraged to take ownership and grow their skills - Culture is collaborative and transparent. Team members genuinely like each other and very common to hang out outside of the office

Cons

- If you're looking for a cushy 9-to-5, this is not the right place. Definitely a fast-moving startup environment but we're often sprinting - Always a lot of balls in the air. When one lands, another one gets started. Don't expect a lot of downtime.
