So much potential being wasted

Pros

Smart, dedicated people; well-known adhesive brand (Loctite); opportunities for international assignments and mentoring (but only if you're identified as "high potential").

Cons

It's not a good sign when the new head of HR at Henkel leaves after only a year. The company has become an increasingly difficult place to work, for many reasons: - Henkel considers the U.S. a "mature market," which means they want profits but don't want to invest in the business. Headcount and budgets have been shrinking for years. - Big decisions are made in Germany with little regard for the impact on the U.S. or other regions. - Waves of layoffs and early retirements have drained the company of institutional knowledge and hurt morale. - Poor work-life balance. Remaining employees are overworked and stressed out. - Too much focus on short-term financial results. Training and travel budgets are regularly cut to meet quarterly numbers. - Technology is cumbersome and outdated. - Support functions like accounts payable are offshored to low wage countries like the Philippines with predictably chaotic results. - Raises are meager. Annual performance review system forces managers to rank employees in a bell curve regardless of their actual job performance.

Pros

Great people in terms of intelligence, teamwork, and willingness to collaborate. Culture can be dry but not because of a lack of good people. Pay was also competitive, as well as benefits.

Cons

Upper management/Executive team are all Europeans from the company headquarters in Dusseldorf, Germany. This is a con as the leadership is from a distance, which is challenging in terms of understanding local issues. There was some sentiment that Americans were not as highly valued as their German counterparts. I saw evidence of this when asking about ex-pat assignments. It is rare for Americans to go to Dusseldorf but common for Europeans to be in North America. There was also a general lack of training in my department, which frustrated me, as I wanted to learn more to grow into new positions. Felt "contained" during the end of my time at Henkel.

Pros

Used to be a good place to work, last 7 years has been a consistent decline and it's not getting better.

Cons

This site has an ungrateful, uninspired, selfish, immature, non loyal, deceitful, and worthless work force. This site has an HR that has its own agenda which picks and chooses who and when they'll support. This same HR is never available especially at critical times and uses "legal" as a way to either stall a decision or eliminate disciplinary actions so that the same worthless workforce can get away with murder. This site has an upper management team that has no relationship or history with its workforce with the main goal of the bottom line. The scared Mid level management is in complete disarray with several different managing styles and no support from above.
